Aotearoa Festival of Architecture events happening in the Canterbury region this September.

State of Practice - Crafting the Future of Architecture in Christchurch

Monday 23 September, 5.30pm -8.15pm, "Visions/The Pantry" Ara City Campus

This event is a collaborative initiative between the NZIA and Ara’s Department of Engineering and Architectural Studies, aimed at showcasing and discussing impactful projects shaping the architectural landscape in Ōtautahi Christchurch. The symposium will explore critical themes such as innovations in sustainable design, the integration of te ao Māori, and ways to strengthen the connection between architectural practice and education. Our goal is to share insights, mobilise collaborations, and enhance professional networks through this symposium.

The draft agenda is as follows:

  • 5.30 pm - Event opens - canapes and drinks served
  • 6:00 pm - Welcome by Huia Reriti (NZIA President)
  • 6.15 pm - Several presentations on the “State of Practice” with the key themes:
    a. Through the Local Lens Part I (macro-scale): Joseph Hampton from W+M
    b. Through the Local Lens Part II (micro-scale): Andrew Just from Field Architects
    c. Sustainability in Practice Part I: Vanessa Carswell from Jasmax
    d. New ideas revived traditions Part I: Jane Rooney from Architectus
    e. Integrating Mātauranga and Te ao Māori: Peter Dick from W&M/ex student of Ara (confirmed)
    f. New ideas revived traditions Part II: Jasper van der Lingen
  • 7.15 pm - Break
  • 7.30 pm - Q & A from the audience and a panel discussion hosted by Jessica Halliday, the director of Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture and City Making in Christchurch
  • 8:00 pm - Closing by Dr. Adam Khan, Academic Manager Architecture studies and Interior Design at Ara
  • 8:15 pm - End of event

Resene Sir Ian Athfield Memorial Lecture 2024: Sebastián Irarrázaval

Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects is thrilled to welcome Sebastián Irarrázaval — architect, educator and founder of his eponymous practice in Santiago, Chile. Sebastián presents his talk as part of the Aotearoa Festival of Architecture.

Tim Ross Presents - Architecture is Ace

Thursday 26 September, 5.30pm, The Jones House by Athfield

Australian comedian, writer, television presenter, and professional architecture nerd Tim Ross presents 'Architecture is Ace'. Part slideshow, part stand-up comedy, and part architecture talk, it's a 70-minute showed anchored by Ross' passion for architecture.

However you can watch an encore screening of Tim’s 3-part documentary Designing a Legacy. On air Tuesday's at 9pm, starting 24 Sept on Sky Arts (Sky Channel 20) and then available on SkyGo, Sky Box or Pod to Sky Arts subscribers.
