Highly Commended – Icao Tiseli
Icao Tiseli, from the University of Auckland, has been highly commended at the 2018 NZIA Resene Student Design Awards with her project ‘Mapping the Feke ’.
Project description
Maps can offer great insight into our worlds. In this project, the process of mapping, which harnesses the spirit of rebellion through an indigenous lens, is concerned with the stories of the invisible few, the everyday people of the Pacific. In celebrating and encouraging revisions of cartographic elements, this project claims new positions, discovering and cultivating new realities to reflect the richness of Tongan culture.
Citation
This project is a lyrical expression of physical and cultural cartography. A rich and resonant scheme, beautifully drawn and exquisitely modeled, draws on Tongan traditions of mapping and celestial navigation to locate a people at the centre of their wide and watery world. In contrast to the Western tradition, it reconciles architecture, grounded in one place, with navigation, travel between many places.
