Highly Commended – Annie Tong

Annie Tong, from the University of Auckland School of Architecture and Planning, was highly commended for her project, 'The Fleeting Acts'.

Project description

This project focuses on the role of drawing in the presence of an event, in locating and engaging participants and observers in a series of theatrical acts set within a discontinuous series of city spaces occupied by a performer. Here, architecture is a vehicle for a theatre of the everyday. The spaces are settings for portrayals of domesticity – eating, brushing teeth, dressing. They are a reminder of the private and intimate conditions of everyday routines.

Citation

In this many-layered work for a protagonist, participants and observers, architecture plays a fourth role. It is a vehicle for the theatrical, a means for transforming prosaic, everyday routines into an evocatively choreographed performance grafted onto, and into, the city’s fabric. This intellectual and highly conceptual approach treats the city like a ‘found object’, with seemingly random spaces defined through exceptional drawings that evoke an atmosphere in which intrigue, and even unease, can be the result of ordinary occurrences.
