Selected Project

Bluebridge Ferry Terminal

New passenger ferry operator Bluebridge required a passenger-friendly facility close to its ship berth with efficient check-in counters and baggage handling bays. Drive-on customers required clear vehicle maneuvering and marshalling lanes. A wide curved canopy acknowledges the prevailing wind and rain and protects the pick up/drop off kerbside and front door area as well as shading office windows from afternoon sun. Roll-on/roll-off traffic to ship berths on either side further constrained the terminal site to a tight footprint, reflected in the plan. "CentrePort is thrilled with the outcome which provides an excellent facility for ferry passengers, using design detail which is durable, timeless, and highly energy efficient," says Neville Hyde, CentrePort’s strategic development manager. The site lent itself to taking advantage of the reliable breeze from predictable directions and very clean air in the waterside setting. Other sustainable design components in the building include: - a flexible plan with a moment resisting steel skeleton and few load bearing walls which will permit many possible reconfigurations over the life of the building if required - opening window banks that provide natural ventilation, automatically controlled by temperature, wind, rain and CO2 sensors, obviating the need for air conditioning - self washing windows through absence of eaves on the sun-free south side, channeling northerly rain onto the high glass from the gutterless north canopy which also assists in provision of natural light to the interior - choice of low value high serviceability materials for the building skin and interior finishes to ensure a ruggedness allowing the building to gain a patina with age rather than gather a growing maintenance list.
