The Amore

The Amore Pacific Cosmetics & Beauty Therapy store is located in the new entrance to the Grand Arcade, Willis Street, one of the highest pedestrian traffic zones in the Wellington CBD. The original entrance was narrowed and additional retail space constructed on either side of the foyer, one of which was the site for The Amore, a shop space of less than 20m2. The Brief asked for the fitout quality to reflect and promote the image of the premier Korean cosmetics company, and be achieved within a limited budget and tight timeline. Two main spaces were required: a retail display and sales area with a sales counter sufficiently large to accommodate two staff, and a private beauty therapy area including a bed, vanity, associated equipment and a make-up application table. The store had to be eye catching to compete in the already busy environment. Given the small site, the efficient use of space and how that space was divided was a primary factor in developing the design. The the main joinery unit was designed with a dual function: to effectively display a range of products, and to separate the public and consultation areas. In order to maximise the available shop space, the display joinery uses a sweeping curve that wraps around the sales counter from the entrance, simultaneously providing an attractive backdrop for the store when viewed from the street. The joinery was designed and constructed with simplicity in mind, with a seamless, clean look in order to maintain the focus on the displayed product. The lighting was structured to further highlight the products. The illuminated poster and header sign draw attention to the display. The overall colour scheme is kept deliberately simple, with few accents apart from product and branding images. The existing floor tiles were retained, creating a more seamless transition from the street/arcade to the shop space. Light neutral colours were selected for joinery, wall and ceiling finishes, and matched with light timber laminates for the highlights.
