Eldon Lodge Hospital & Resthome

Sited on gently sloping ground in the foothills behind Paraparaumu, Eldon Lodge provides residential aged care facilities to the Kapiti Coast community. In 2003 when Bell Kelly Beaumont Team Architects were first engaged by Eldercare New Zealand (now known as Oceania New Zealand) the facility included resthome and hospital accommodation in a mixture of buildings of varying styles, ages and conditions. What has followed is an upgrade and expansion programme that has addressed the current regulatory requirements as well as the market expectations. Completed in 2005, the first part of the programme was the development of a new dementia unit incorporating current best practice for Stage III care. The result has been a modern, yet domestic facility that through careful planning, selection of materials and finishes has a fresh and pleasant atmosphere while facilitating staff in providing a high level of care and attention to residents. The 41 bed extension to the hospital care unit was completed in early 2009. This new wing has been designed with sheltered courtyards acting as the focus of the new community. The new rooms provide long term hospital level care for the residents. Consideration of environmental sustainability and providing a building that can respond to changes in operational demands were key programme items for the design team.
