Kahurangi School
Kahurangi School’s new master plan proposes better connections to the surrounding community, improving traffic management and the feasibility of a new community centre/covered indoor pool facility to replace the current, aging, unused outdoor pool. There is significant support from the council for this facility which would become a centre for learning to swim in the wider Miramar Peninsula. S&T provided a modern school facility on the site utilising the current buildings, addressing the challenges of seismic upgrades, and yet provides transparency and new connections between learning spaces. Creating something visibly new that gives the school a new identity while reusing the existing buildings. The school is seen a central focus for the local community. The library has been placed at the front of the school with full glazing to the street - inviting the community in. A school merger on the Miramar Peninsula Kahurangi School now provides a modern learning environment for 140 primary school students in Wellington. Kahurangi School merges two existing schools, Strathmore Community School and Miramar South School on the Strathmore site. The S&T team addressed the physical condition of and improving buildings and their seismic capacity, while also surveying the building services throughout the school and its site infrastructure.
