Rotorua Central

Rotorua Central is a 48,000m2 regional shopping centre located adjacent to Rotorua’s CBD. In the early 1990’s it was a 14Ha abandoned railway yard, in a town with poor consumer demographics and a limited retail offer. It was a challenging opportunity and RCG commenced the process of unlocking the financial value of the site by researching the market to inform how to unlock the visitor and residential spending potential in the region. Then, the practise worked with the Iwi owners to develop an innovative master planning approach which created benefits for, not only a diverse mix of CBD retailers, but also the site’s owners. Continuously over the last 20 years to the present, RCG has managed the development process and also designed the centre throughout its various development phases. Importantly it has achieved its objective of attracting a range of national retailers to the centre. The value of the site has increased, such that bank funding was realised, all of which significantly reduced calls on cash from the owners. Rotorua Central is now a powerful, regional shopping destination, beside a vibrant CBD shopping and hospitality area. RCG is currently working on refreshing the centre’s architecture and tenant mix and working on further expansion plans.
