Pie Melon Bay Farm Residence

This private residence commissioned in 2000 and completed in 2001 provides a unique building in a fabulous environment. Large tracts of the farm are being regenerated with native plantings to revitalise native bird life. Landscaping for this home was paramount in the design for the home and as a result the substantial building touches lightly on its environment, with parts of the building being buried under the escarpment from which the building emerges. Careful selection of materials for the building shared with the landscape needs is dominated by selected Northland stone carefully crafted into the design of the building and extending on into beach side boathouse and landscape elements. Extensive timber finishes provide a quality of craftmanship rarely seen today. The areas created within the building provide a variety of spaces which are able to be utilised for activities such as quiet reading, listening to music, recreational and passive uses, with a free flowing transition from inside to outside. Walls can be change from fully opened to being completely shuttered. The home has a real sense of arrival, entering, moving through and opening out onto splendid views over the pristine beach, to the surf. the Islands of Hauraki Gulf and on to the Pacific Ocean.
