Selected Project
Massey Library and Leisure Centre
In meeting a brief reflecting the Eco City philosophy the building design features rain water collection, evaporative cooling over an entrance pond and an abundance of high level natural light and ventilation. Concrete thermal mass floors suspended over underground ducts with fans draw air in that has been cooled by the water and natural zincalume roofing and cladding is left unpainted to reflect unwanted heat gain. The features are as much educational as they are functional. An interactive photovoltaic panel installation is linked to computer displays in the library so that users can compare electricity generated by the building against electricity used by the building. The design also acknowledges local historic links. The awning at the entrance for example is a reference to gum-digger campsites that were once a feature of the district. The building won the New Zealand Premiere Creative Places Award in 2002.
