University of Waikato - Te Ahurutanga
Antanas Procuta Architects have also been involved in an array of urban design and community projects. Richard Mauriohooho has been the lead architect involved in the reconfiguration and construction of what was the Maori and Pacific Island Facility for Student Support on the Waikato University Campus. Known as Te Ahurutanga, the building whare is situated on a thoroughfare through the campus and opened up onto a south-facing courtyard. "We were limited by space and the existing form," says Richard. "This was overcome by opening up the northern face of the building which increased the primary aspect to connect with the main arterial walkway." The result is an airy, modern work space based on traditional Maori themes of water and sky reflected in the palette of blues and teals. The existing board and batten construction and wooden beams throughout reflect the bones of the building but then the architecture reveals a contemporary twist. The use of colourful perspex in the style of tukutuku panels (traditional woven screens) is a striking and functional feature, providing protection from the elements.
