Selected Project

TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre at The Pah Homestead

Built in 1877 as James Williamson’s residence, the Pah Homestead is located in Monte Cecilia Park in Auckland. The substantial house was later used as an educational and religious institution. In 2001-2 the historic house and surrounding grounds were purchased by Auckland City Council to establish a new public park in Hillsborough. Matthews & Matthews Architects Ltd were the architects for the conservation and adaptive re-use of the house to house the TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre, opened in August 2010. Structural upgrading, fire protection, air-conditioning, security and lighting have been discretely installed, while original features were carefully restored by specialist conservators. Well-designed new elements have been installed such as cast bronze air-conditioning floor grilles, and the lift interior, inspired by the timber panelling in the Hall. The garden, once neglected, has also been conserved and re-built based on an understanding of its earlier design.
