Selected Project

Auckland East Correctional Facility

It is located within the existing Auckland Prison precinct, containing prisoners from every security classification (minimum, low, low-medium, medium, high, maximum). Accommodating 260 prisoners, an additional 18-bed At Risk Unit was included for management of prisoners at risk of self-harm. While the facility is designed for the highest security-rated prisoners in New Zealand, the design strives for a balance between meeting security and safety imperatives, while maintaining a therapeutic and dignified living environment. The design also has a focus on community inclusion with several facilities optimised for official and unofficial visitors to participate in the rehabilitation of prisoners’ lives. The project was delivered in collaboration with the New Zealand Department of Corrections and the Next Step Partners Consortium, in which MODE were lead designers.
