Wanaka House
Located on the outskirts of Wanaka, this project is a home for a couple entering retired life. The programme is centred around the client’s passion for music, food, entertaining and their enjoyment of the Wanaka vistas. In a response to the landscape and extreme climate, the design aims of this project were to provide shelter whilst connecting with the dramatic landscape. The house design draws inspiration from the local schist rocks set into the land against which pioneers pitched bivouac shelters. The house is conceived as a frame set into the land against a rock over which the roofing is draped.
