Newton Central Post Office

Designed by Mark Brown Fairhead & Sang – the Newton Central Post Office has occupied the corner of Karangahape Road and East Street since its public opening in 1973. The late modernist design was constructed out of in-situ concrete and clad in large format Italian terrazzo panels. The brief was to repurpose the 500sqm floor plate – previously occupied by a conveniece store and post office, and re-engage the building street frontage to Karangahape Road. A new language of expanded sheet metal, in-situ concrete, terrazzo and glass is utilised throughout the interior and exterior. Steel bifold doors provide flexible permeability between the street and hospitality, while large format glass offers a canvas for artists.
