Athenree Homestead Katikati
This homestead was built in 1879 by the Stewart family. Adela Stewart wrote the book 'My Simple Life in New Zealand' on her adventures in building the historic Katitkati homestead and gardens. In the 1950s the homestead was deserted and left to fall into ruin. By the late 1980s substantial damage had taken place, but the local community chose to rescue the building, and begun a long term project to restore the home. A Conservation Plan was produced and over 2/3 of the homestead has now been repaired and restored. The last 1/3 the service areas was beyond repair and is to be reconstructed.
