Jerram Batch
The site is a low dune set one row of houses back from the beach but backing onto an estuary behind. The estuary side is sheltered from the prevailing winds while the beach side has the sun and views. The floor of the bach steps so that from the upper level views to the sea from the sitting space are maintained while at the rear the dining/kitchen area relates to the grassed outdoor space. An important aspect of the design is its transparency. From the living space one can see back through to the estuary and from the rear lawn one is aware of sun and light at the front. Doors open the living spaces completely to the outside deck and garden areas. The roof plane floats over the transparent living areas while being anchored to the solid form of the bedroom wing. Large roof overhangs, with no posts, are a modern interpretation of a verandah, providing shelter and relief from the sun. The sail is a soft verandah which also lets through diffuse light. Interior floors and ceilings are plywood and have been blonded to a soft white reminiscent of driftwood.
