Cox's Bay House

Extensive renovations and a mix of traditional and contemporary finishes have transformed a single-storey bungalow. HMOA has created a new open-plan kitchen and living space and added an upper level with main bedroom, ensuite and office providing views of the Sky Tower and Auckland Harbour. The historical integrity of the streetscape is retained by keeping the front of the house as it was, while the back section of the home was demolished and reconstructed in a similar style. Interiors are a mix of old and new – rimu floors and the original stained-glass door and fireplace surround alongside oak cabinetry and a modern kitchen. Existing sliding sash windows have been double-glazed. The house, which was originally constructed as a worker's home for the steam-powered Cox's Bay timber mill – now the site of the Grey Lynn Countdown – runs on Tesla solar panels, which can also power an electric car.
