Selected Project
Lovers Lane Bridge and Cafler Park Boardwalk
We were chosen as the lead consultant for the bridge design and elevated boardwalk, stemming from a collaborative design concept with Te Parawhau with the late Dr Benjamin Pitman and Boffa Miskell. The design references the important local heritage by framing and encouraging views to Kauika pā, with the “portal” at the western end representing the transition from the historic to modern environment. The bridge also features laser cut patiki patterns to represent the kai the broader area was historically known for. Concerns had been raised about the safety and practicality of the previous bridge: specifically, the low handrails posing risks to cyclists and the abutments in the Waiarohia Stream increasing the likelihood of flooding. These issues have been addressed in the new design as well as providing a unique portal from the shaded Cafler Park Boardwalk to the modern urban environment of the new civic centre and Whangarei central library. Our team worked closely with contractors to ensure the safe and efficient installation of the bridge by designing temporary works solutions, including crane pads on the river bank. The bridge construction was carried out by Canam and their sub-contractors, while the timber boardwalk and safety barriers were completed by BDX.
