Selected Project

Hawaiki Cable Landing Station

The Hawaiki Cable Landing Station, situated at Mangawhai Heads, receives the trans-Pacific fibre optic cable connecting New Zealand with Australia and America, as well as Pacific nations such as American Samoa and Hawaii. This building was custom designed to house the electrical equipment required to receive the cable, along with plant and stand-by generating systems to maintain operations even during a power outage. The building is constructed from pre-cast concrete panel with unispan suspended concrete ceiling. It is clad in random width timber batten over plywood sheet rain-screen, with glazing to the roof void, and tray profile, longrun metal roof cladding. The requirement was for the building to blend in with the local environment, originally conceived as a “farm-building”. We provided full service as the key-designer, with McKay Electrical as the lead contractor, from initial concept design to building consent and project overview during construction. Services provided were geotechnical assessment, civil works, structural engineering, and architectural design and detailing.
