Mountain Retreat
Drawing on the history and geography of its location, this rugged yet sophisticated retreat is outstanding from concept to completion. Invisible on arrival, the building - located just below the bush line - is approached via steps from the roof down into the trees. Rigorous detailing conceals the mechanics of construction, allowing it to read convincingly as an extension of the terrain. A combination of simple ‘slice form’ and appropriate materials complete the camouflage. Expert handling of the plan and seamless integration of fittings and finishes reinforce the masterstroke - an ‘impossibly’ unsupported and transparent corner. The resultant blurring of interior and exterior creates a unity with the landscape, setting this building apart as a retreat embraced by its surroundings, rather than a platform from which to gaze.
