Beach House - Whangarei
The client’s request was for a “contemporary, low maintenance two storey beach bach that captured the expansive views and ensured both privacy from and for the next-door neighbours”. The house consists of a rectangular “public” part placed askew to the “private” portion and articulated by the “dividing” wall. The dynamic relationship between these two elements is reiterated in the expansive entertainment deck on the Northwest corner. The dividing wall with its solid “punctured” appearance acts as a filter, while in contrast the rest of the walls are designed to create a high level of transparency with the monopitch roof seemingly floating over the glass. The recessed base below the deck contributes to the apparent lightness of the first storey while the slatted fin at the front of the deck anchors the building firmly to the ground and guides visitors up the curved stairs. The restricted cladding materials palette was mainly left in its natural state, thus reducing the level of maintenance while weathering to reflect the natural environment.
