Mangamahu Farm House
With great fortitude the owners of this family farm set about rebuilding their farm and their house after a flood in 2004 covered the farm with a metre deep of silt. The Regional Council would not allow the house to be rebuilt unless it was 3 metres above the level of its predecessor. Using the silt which covered many hectares of the farm, the owner constructed a large raised site area close to the previous house and sited to take advantage of existing views, sun and the established trees which had survived. The final design resolved as a two level house to provide for as much site area as possible for outside living and landscape opportunity. Also a two storied house was a traditional form in the valley and was felt it would relate well to the raised site and take more advantage of the views to the north and east. The materials chosen - corrugated steel, plaster and timber while also being traditional are very suitable to the climate and relate well to the wooshed close by and overlooked by the house.
