House in the Elements
This house was designed for a couple who want to be close to the drama of the sea and sand dunes, while also being able to retreat to more cocooned living spaces. The beachfront site has intermittent strong wind, sun, and airborne sand and salt. There is a neighbour at the northern boundary, and a reserve area to the south, featuring native grasses and sand dunes. The home is divided into private and public areas. The private space represents the land, and is built of solid plaster to give shelter and protection. The public area is made of cedar weatherboards and plywood and reflects the sea, featuring random skylights to mimic the dappled ocean light. The materials will weather naturally in tune with the elements.
