House in the Bay

This young couple loved the wild Wellington south coast. They wanted a house that would enhance their experience of the natural environment and yet be protected from it. The materials had to suit the marine environment. The site is a narrow strip at the base of a steep hill, facing west. It’s across the road from a small bay linking to the Pacific Ocean with views to the Kaikoura mountain range. The house has large windows looking out to the ocean and the Kaikouras, and linking back to the bush clad hill. An open fire provides comfort in stormy seas. Low maintenance materials such as cedar, white plaster and copper will continue to look attractive as they weather.
