Selected Project

DFS Beauty Centre

DFS Galleria commissioned the architecture BREWER DAVIDSON to upgrade their fragrance/cosmetics store at Auckland Airport into "a world class beauty centre". The client's brief was for a "clinical and clean" atmosphere whilst keeping the 'feminine glamour' required for cosmetics sales. 'Cool white' was used as a base colour, softened with large amounts of indirect blue lighting and contrasting with the colours of each house brand. Visual enticement is critical given that most people are rushing to their airplane, so large use was made of backlit graphics to catch the shoppers' eye whilst also reinforcing the "glamour" of the products being sold. The existing store was doubled in size with an elliptical circulation following the store perimeter wall along which the cosmetic and fragrance houses are located. Two circular canopy ceilings were designed to anchor the open space area, whilst revolving backlit signs visible from the walkway above the store add a "larger than life" presence. Aluminium trusses span the ceiling to house metal halide lighting, which give impact to product throughout the store. The store opened on time and to budget in December 2002.
