Selected Project
Huatoki Plaza
This urban design project (involving substantial public consultation) has opened up part of New Plymouth’s CBD, creating a vibrant, safe and commercially sustaining asset for the city. New Plymouth District Council seized this opportunity to inject new life into the city’s urban fold and specifically this central location, with foresight, and acknowledging the premise that a thriving, dynamic and healthy city is one which embraces its urban nature and recognises the importance of locally relevant architecture and design. This project embraces ‘pavement life’ with an urban architectural solution that encompasses street art, theatre and sculpture, colour, movement and scale, and provides for alfresco dining, dedicated pedestrian areas and linkages between key city streets. It is a celebration of the city and of a unique landmark. The design enhances the historical, environmental and cultural significance of the Huatoki Stream, which runs through the city from Mt Taranaki to the sea. The design solution was guided by the NZ Urban Design Protocol’s essential design qualities of context, character, choice, connections, creativity, custodianship and collaboration, in an effort to define New Plymouth’s identity and ensure liveability and wellbeing are maintained and enhanced for city residents and visitors.
