St Francis Retreat Seismic Upgrade

This building was designed by well-known Architect George Tole in a Modern Italian Style with a Georgian framework and was officially opened in 1940. It has significant local historic value as the 1st Franciscan monastery & retreat to be developed in New Zealand. A full seismic upgrade will greatly extend the life of this fabulous Category B historic building. The front colonnade, which was in danger of collapse and has had to be demolished will be rebuilt as close as possible to match existing using new bricks which have been carefully permanently colored to match the existing in the old colonnade . Major refurbishment work to the original interior including a new lift and kitchen & service areas will bring the retreat into the modern world and will enhance the patron & visitor experience as well as provide economic benefits to the Retreat with cost in use.
