Selected Project
Village Exchange
The Village Exchange development is made up of one single-storey and three three-storey buildings with under croft car parking below. Stringent planning requirements required the new development to reflect the grain and scale of the Havelock North Village. The overall built form has been broken down through the articulation of façade depths, varied expression of structure, multiple roof forms, vertical fins, eyebrows and changes of material to emphasis the four distinct buildings. The new street frontages consist of street level glazing to provide a sense of openness and connectivity. The continuous commercial activity to the Te Aute Road and Havelock Road frontages has reactivated the street edge. And generous, welcoming pedestrian links connect the inner courtyard. A variety of canopy designs provide interest and continuous shelter along the street edges and the corner of Te Aute Road and Havelock Road is strongly defined with built forms located on the boundary. Subtle design references have been introduced to link to Havelock North’s agricultural surroundings through the organic patterns which form the filigree screens. The project incorporates an additional bus park immediately adjacent to the site to further encourage public transport and reduce the need for private transport. And the incorporation of sheltered bicycle parking areas and showers is intended to promote occupant and visitor cycling and foot commuting. The Village Exchange has been designed so that it achieves a good fit with the site and its context. Physical linkage to the Village and connectivity across the site has been provided by carefully located, designed, landscaped and lit pedestrian connections and paths. The proposal has significantly enhanced the amenity of Havelock North.
