Selected Project
Papatoetoe Sports Centre
The main objective behind the Papateotoe Sports Centre was to provide an inspiring environment for the local community and act as the catalyst for the re-stimulation of the Hunters Corner commercial precinct Drawing on prior experience in sport-community projects, a collaboration was formed between Hillery Priest Architecture (HPA) as design architect, and Pacific Environments Architects (PEL) as project architect, to deliver the project. The design team (for which Dion Gosling was a design architect) wanted to provide a Centre for the community that inspired its athletes, the sport administrators, coaches, staff and the public who would enter the facility and its surrounds The Centre includes for a 3-lane indoor cricket facility, offices and administration areas, a fully operational commercial kitchen and separate canteen, flexible community meeting spaces, six-team sports changerooms, referees changerooms, strength and conditioning gymnasium with separate changerooms, two function rooms with a connecting informal lounge, multiple terraces to enable views over the Reserve An honest, robust and durable material palette was used to assist with budgetary constraints and on-going maintenance sustainability. This allowed for clear interpretation of building form and function conditions. The approach to climate and operational sustainability follows. Large roof overhangs and design for natural light and ventilation reduces operational costs and reliance on HVAC systems. Solar pre-heat panels boosts the hot water system The building now functions as the place where the sharing of knowledge across the various sports and people can take place – the concept of Sportsville “In all facets of the project, Dion displayed a high level of knowledge, much perseverance and patience, a very professional approach, an ability to help us work through the issues in an objective and reasoned manner, and a keen understanding of the requirements of the sporting and community groups involved.” Rick Child, Chairman of the Papatoetoe Sports and Community Charitable Trust
