The winners of the 2024 New Zealand Architecture Awards will be announced at a celebratory evening on Friday 22 November in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
The awards honour the best architecture produced in Aotearoa New Zealand, with this year’s recipients selected from a shortlist of 48 projects across 12 categories. From Awanui to Ōtepoti, there was an excellent geographic spread, said jury convenor Caro Robertson, principal of Spacecraft Architects. “So many projects came from completely different walks of life but use the vehicle of architecture to explore the potential of partnership,” she said, following the tour. “It was great to see beautiful adaptive reuse work, as well as innovative attempts at reducing carbon footprint in new builds.”
The jury, comprising architects Ari Stevens of Athfield Architects, Julie Stout of Mitchell Stout Dodd and Patrick Kennedy of Kennedy Nolan in Naarm Melbourne, Australia, accompanied Robertson on the national tour.
As well as national category winners, recipients will also be announced for the F. Gordon Wilson Fellowship for Public Housing, John Sutherland Practice Award, Sir Miles Warren Award for Commercial Architecture, Ted McCoy Award for Education, Sir Ian Athfield Award for Housing and the John Scott Award for Public Architecture.
Guest judge lecture
Preceding the event, Patrick Kennedy will present ‘How to be an Architect now?’, a free lecture commencing midday. He says it is the most compelling question they ask themselves at Kennedy Nolan. “We are still working out how we respond to place and our unresolved relationship to it. And we are still asking how best to respond to the climate catastrophe,” says Kennedy.

New Zealand Architecture Awards 2024
The 2024 New Zealand Architecture Awards will be held at the Viaduct Events Centre, from 6pm on Friday 22 November. Doors open at 6pm for an hour of canapés and drinks. The awards ceremony begins at 7pm and includes an intermission. The awards take place thanks to the support of our sponsors, Resene and APL.
