Technical Design Lead - JWA Architects - Jonathan Walker Architects

Jonathan Walker Architects | Auckland CBD | Date Listed: 31/01/2025

We are looking for an experienced and diligent architect, technician, or otherwise qualified project leader to join our team as Technical Design Lead supporting the delivery of our projects at a studio-wide level. You will gain familiarity with our work and methods through leading your own projects as a pathway to the wider studio role. This is a full-time position.

JWA emphasises that all parts of the project delivery cycle are design activities, and this role focuses on defining, structuring, and overseeing the successful resolution of technical aspects of architecture in the delivery of high-quality construction documentation, including BIM deliverables. Your role spans all active projects in the studio, as well as the opportunity to lead your own projects. We will support your own continual development including training, CPD, and other initiatives, which we invite your input on.

The Technical Design Lead role influences and shares responsibility for construction documentation quality in the studio, with emphasis on the Developed and Detailed Design phases. We recognise that high quality documentation in these phases determines the success and smoothness of the construction and observation phases, and ultimately the design quality of the built outcome.

Along with leading your own projects, you will continually assist and help upskill our diversely qualified team in resolving design detailing and consultant coordination, and as a result play a major role in achieving our design outcomes.

As a team of creators and makers, we consistently look for improvement and efficiency in what we do. We encourage creative and novel solutions, and as a growing practice there are many opportunities to innovate while helping us develop new tools and systems.

Skills and Experience

• A registered architect with at least 10 years experience in complex architectural project delivery, or
• Have held a Senior Technician role for at least five years with experience on complex projects >$10m in value including site observation, or
• Having held a similar Technical Lead role in a design-led commercial architecture practice.
• High level of experience and familiarity with NZBC, relevant AS/NZS standards (e.g. 3604, 4121, 1170), NZCIC Guidelines, NZBIM Handbook.
• Experienced in the coordination and detailing of complex building designs, including multi-storey steel and concrete structures, complex facade systems, and associated services coordination, as well as the procurement, shop drawing, and site observation phases of same.
• Highly competent in the use of Revit to create construction documentation to consent/IFC level, and familiar with coordination tools such as Revizto and Navisworks
• Familiarity, but not expertise, in BIM projects including advanced BIM coordination and delivery (i.e. >LOD300) is required
• Experience in mass timber projects, high performance envelope analysis, or PassiveHaus is an advantage
• Familiarity with standard forms of contract such as NZIA AAS, NZS 3910, and CCCS is an advantage
• Familiarity with architectural project management, particularly alignment of resources with scope and fee is an advantage
• New Zealand Residency or a valid New Zealand work visa is a requirement
