2024 Warren Trust Awards for Architectural Writing Illustration Competition

We’re on the hunt for illustrations for this year’s winning entries of the Warren Trust Writing Awards. Submit your art for a chance to win one of five $500 cash prizes.

The Writing Awards’ winner Of Belonging and Loss by Tessa Forde is considered an illustration in itself and is not being put forward for this competition.

Conditions of entry

1. Theme and Concept

Theme: Your illustration must align with the story’s theme.

Originality: All entries must be original, created specifically for this competition. No prior published work is allowed.

 

2. Technical Specifications

Dimensions: The illustration should be sized at 148mm wide x 210mm high
Resolution: Minimum resolution of 300 DPI for high-quality print.
File Format: Submit illustrations in these formats, JPEG, TIFF, PDF.
Photoshop / Illustrator Layers: All layers must be flattened.
Colour Mode: CMYK colour mode is required for print.
Text in illustrations: If any text is included, the fonts must be converted to paths/outlines.

 

3. Content Guidelines

Text: If any text is included, it should be clear and readable.
Content: The illustration should be suitable for a wide audience and should not contain any offensive or inappropriate material.
Copyright: The submission must be wholly the work of the person submitting it.  Entries must not infringe on any third-party copyrights or trademarks.

 

4. Submission Process

Deadline: All entries must be submitted by 3pm Monday 23 September 2024.
Submission Method: Submit your illustrations to writingawards@nzia.co.nz. Large files can be sent to this email address via file sharing sites such as WeTransfer, Dropbox, etc.
File Naming: Submit your entry email with the title of the story you are illustrating, your name and contact details (including address), and a sentence or two about yourself. Name your files as: “FirstName_LastName_Title”.
No correspondence with the competition’s judges will be entered into. The judges’ decision regarding the winning illustrations is final.

 

5. Judging Criteria

Creativity: How unique and imaginative is the illustration?
Relevance: How well does the illustration align with the theme of the writing?
Quality of execution: including composition, colour usage, and technique.
Impact: The emotional or intellectual impact of the illustration.

 

6. Rights and Usage

Usage Rights: By entering the competition, you grant Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects the right to print and display the illustration in the competition book, the Institute’s website and social media accounts, related promotional materials and third-party publishers.
Attribution: All published works will be credited to the artist.

 

7. Additional Guidelines

Number of Entries: Each participant can submit up to 1 (one) illustration. One entry per person.
Revisions: The organisers reserve the right to request minor revisions to the winning illustrations for the purpose of print optimisation.
Eligibility: The competition is open to all ages. Entrants must be Aotearoa New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

The Warren Trust Awards for Architectural Writing is a joint venture between The Warren Trust and Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects. The Warren Trust is a charitable organisation established in honour of celebrated architect Sir Miles Warren, which promotes architectural education to the profession and public.
