Finalist – Jacob Bowden

Jacob Bowden from Unitec School of Architecture, was a finalist in the 2019 NZIA Resene Student Design Awards for his project, 'Plasti-city'.

Project description

This confronting, provocative and purposeful project intends to raise Aucklanders’ awareness of their ‘plastic issue’ to an unignorable level.

Citation

This confronting, provocative and purposeful project intends to raise Aucklanders’ awareness of their ‘plastic issue’ to an unignorable level. Architecturally, Jacob’s scheme responds to the existing condition of Queen’s Wharf, the only downtown Auckland wharf to which the public has access. The building has both a practical and a didactic purpose; one lesson imparted is that plastic need not be the material villain of our times – it can be re-purposed, repeatedly, to useful effect. In fact, the plastic building block that is a component of the project has very attractive architectural qualities and formal possibilities.
