Finalist – Annaliese Mirus

Annaliese Mirus, from the Unitec Department of Architecture, was a finalist in the 2018 NZIA Central Innovation Student Design Awards for her project, 'Shedding light on the out of sight'.

Project description

In one year, an average family of four in New Zealand uses over 20 hectares of land to support its lifestyle, yet that same family lives only on a 617 square metre property. This project, for a self-sufficient village in Cardrona Valley, seeks to draw attention to this deficit and shed light on the ‘out of sight’ land that supports consumption beyond suburban boundaries. The village would be designed to include shared and private amenities for food production, including greenhouses integrated into houses made with low-carbon construction methods.

Citation

This ambitious and timely project identifies the environmental footprint of the modern New Zealand household and its lifestyle, and proposes a more sustainable alternative in a fast-growing region. Impressive research is allied to the detailed design resolution of a postulated self-sufficient village in a sensitive and intelligent balancing of architectural expression and sustainable principles.
