2019 Auckland Architecture Awards Winner

ATEED HQ

ATEED is Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development, a council agency with a complex web of client and partner relationships involving corporates, government and government agencies, community groups, sports and cultural groups, many other civic institutions and a range of agencies in other countries. It is, at heart, an agency with a core role in defining who and what the city is, for locals and visitors alike. TOA and 4Work worked with ATEED to create a defining narrative for the workspace, based on the idea of Ngā hau e wha o Tāmaki, or “Embrace the vitality from the four winds of Auckland.” The vestibule areas outside the lift set the tone, with a volcano-related motif leading to a large ātea or reception area, a place commonly used for pōwhiri. On both the floors occupied by ATEED, each of the four sides of the office is treated differently, in colours and imagery, as befits the four winds approach. There are new parts of the story to learn wherever you go. Open plan with hot-desking and a range of private and semi-private meeting areas for staff and visitors, the office reinforces at every turn the identity of its occupants and the purpose of their work. It’s invigorating, purposeful, uniquely affirming architecture.
