The Stage and the Cave
Renovating the character villas of Ponsonby and Grey Lynn is an ever-renewing challenge; one risen to with remarkable panache by Rogan Nash on this long, narrow site. You arrive into the classic villa hallway, with bedrooms off, and then step down into the very large, very contemporary living area spread before you. Sliding glass walls open fully to a large barbecue deck to the left, while more glass walls open at the rear to another courtyard/backyard: there’s such a fluid sense of indoors becoming outdoors you barely know when you are in and when you are not. Ground concrete flooring maintains the sophisticated tone, as does the large kitchen area, with sumptuous interplay between walnut cabinetry and a black granite island. It’s so relaxing, so stylish, so cleverly detailed. Ponsonby Rd might be only 100 metres away, but why go out when it’s this good at home?
