The Landing Precinct around Auckland International Airport features a great number of very large warehouses, often with a small and decidedly undistinguished office building stuck to one end. JWA wanted to do something about that. Although the client was the airport itself, the tenant had a design manual developed overseas, so that gave the architects one framework. They developed another of their own: literally, a steel frame to drape over the two-storey office block, with a patterned steel mesh enclosing the whole. The textures are intriguing and the shape is dramatic, sweeping up and towards the road with sharply angled extremities, highlighting the smartly glazed office exterior and lifting the whole complex with aspirational confidence. Competitors have their little sheds stuck to the sides of bigger sheds. This company understands the excitement and possibilities of trading with the world. You can tell that by looking.
