2019 Canterbury Architecture Awards Winner
Lakeside Soldiers Memorial Hall
This well considered piece of work shows a deep understanding and respect for the building’s purpose and users. The entrance sequence is a beautifully composed, rhythmic series of experiences that clearly establish a sense of place. The internal courtyard is relaxed and calm – the heart of this project, literally and figuratively. The use of recycled brick and the ‘war-time proportions’ encourage mindfulness and remembrance, while a hint of future vibrancy and celebration can be seen in the connected external spaces. The longroom, which sits alongside the courtyard’s flank, is a reflective space – light and ecclesiastical, it is a historic tome to celebrate soldiers lost in distant lands.
