Light Box
You walk down the traditional central hallway of this traditionally restored single-storey villa to an opaque glass door, push it open and step into a contemporary wonderland. Large black kitchen to the right, comfortable living to the left, and ahead of you a luscious back garden seen through a glass wall framed in black steel. The glass wall opens manually, with an easy guiding hand, hinged at the far right and swinging through 90 degrees across the deck. Crosson Architects has devised a breathtakingly grand solution to a standard challenge, and while everything else about the room is beautifully done – from the ribbed green glass set into other walls to the large stainless steel kitchen bench, with cabinetry elevated above the floor – it’s the hinged back wall that makes it special. Open it fully, open it partly, or in the colder weather just use the french doors set into it: whatever choice suits you in the moment, the result is delightful.
