Garden Stoop House

What a splendid example of a house designed for the changing needs of a family over time. With new zoning in place, Alignworks advised their clients of the potential to subdivide the property, should they wish to at some future date. They extended to the front, rather than the rear, so as not to compromise that possibility. They added a new driveway to serve front and back, screening it with a concrete block wall that also defines the signature entrance feature of the house: a generous stoop. Cedar weatherboards keep everything soft and elegant, and give a lift to the older form. The new frontage contains children’s bedrooms and a communal area with its own entrance that serves as a home study now, will become a children’s area as they get older, and one day may revert to home office. That’s work-at-home potential, thoughtfully incorporated, and it’s surprisingly rare. At the back there’s a big new living area and glazed rear wall that slides away to access a spacious deck with louvred shades and a large back garden. It’s one big space and many smaller ones, dedicated to the ebb and flow of family life and all its pleasures.
