2019 Auckland Architecture Awards Winner
Plant and Food Research - Hamilton Building
What a splendid makeover. On the exterior of this seven-storey laboratory/office block, horizontal spandrels that carried the service ducting were ripped off, to be replaced with a lovely green glazed facade, while retaining the projecting corbels as a nod to the original, and introducing a big new “saddlebag” that now contains the services and hangs over one side of the building. New roof, open modern office concepts, and a new corridor down the east side whose views, soft fabric detailing, gentle colour scheme and lengthy, roomy proportions make it one of the finest internal office spaces you’re likely to find anywhere in the city. A new open stair with cantilevered meeting spaces nearby adds an energetic flexibility to the way the whole building is now used, and looks just great from inside and out as well. Bossley Architects not only redesigned the building, they also designed the means by which the staff could carry on working through the alterations. You sense a labour of love; inside, among the staff, you also sense it’s a love the staff are happy to share.
