2019 Auckland Architecture Awards Winner

Auckland Zoo Administration Building

The Auckland Zoo’s former admin block isn’t old, but it’s become both too small for the staff numbers and, with its rows of separate cubbyhole offices, unfit for purpose. Ignite has created a light, bright new home for the zoo staff that handles the demands of hot-desking and lockers with a superb use of colour and clarity in the built forms. The lightness of the space is achieved with extensive glazing, sharply pitched gables down the long east side and a large airy mezzanine suspended from the ceiling by steel rods. Vertical banisters align with vertical shade strips on the gables to complete the sensation. This is handsome, modest, satisfying commercial architecture, achieved so well on a tight budget it feels like less a constraint than a release.
