2019 Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards Winner
Wiseman Central
Built in 1917, this heritage-listed building occupies a prominent corner site in Hamilton’s CBD, and illustrates how adaptive reuse and flexible spatial planning can both breathe new life into the city centre and provide for future flexibility in years to come. The restoration process, which involved stripping back layers of previous ‘cutouts’ to reveal the building’s authentic fabric, is especially evident in the exposed first-floor ceiling and decluttered and restored exterior facade. Generosity to the public realm is evident in the ground floor’s faceted-glass wall, which adds interest to passersby while also acknowledging the rhythm of the windows above.
