2019 Auckland Architecture Awards Winner
Tāmaki Pātaka Kōrero (Auckland Central Library) Adaptation
A client who knew that having no budget should not and could not stop great creative solutions. A graduate architect itching to unleash her graphic design talents on the walls. And, in Athfields, a firm dedicated to raising the humanist bar for architecture everywhere, no matter how “minor” the project. This rethink of the look and feel of the central Auckland library was originally meant to be nothing more than a like-for-like replacement of the carpet. Instead, a new light-and-bright colour scheme, new placement and arrangement of many of the fixtures, new signage, an engrossing mural and bold new vinyl graphics have transformed a problematic space into a charming, engaging, thoroughly welcoming new facility. Never let budget sink your dreams: that’s the message here, and the city is much the richer for it.
