2019 Auckland Architecture Awards Winner

Shortland Health

In the inner city, doctors’ practices are evolving new ways of working, and in Klein’s consulting rooms for Shortland Health, architecture is helping them do it. A subscription-based model and a “concierge” booking system have changed the relationship of doctor and patient, and the challenge for the architects was to devise a smart, sophisticated representation of the new thinking. Don’t like waiting rooms? Don’t have one. Don’t like the institutional signage and noticeboards? Get rid of them. Don’t like the desk as a barrier between doctor and patient? Get rid of that too. Mahogany-toned ply and brass sheet metal set the tone throughout these rooms, with an elegant self-service vestibule, a corridor leading to consultation rooms that has a kind of enticing exoskeletal feel, wrapping you inside, and rooms themselves that are intimate and relaxing. With a clientele at home in an elegant office environment, the whole aesthetic is designed to make them feel confident of their surroundings and comfortable about being there. No easy job for doctors’ rooms anywhere.
