2018 Hawkes Bay/Gisborne Architecture Awards Winner
Marine Parade Redevelopment
The rich and layered design of this public space acknowledges ancient natural and more recent human history while also pointing to the future by giving young people centrestage. The transformation of Marineland included the metamorphosis of the grandstand into a support and spectator building overlooking the new skate park; the action is now laid out for all to see and enjoy. The remainder of the scheme successfully links back to the city, with a variety of inward and outward, passive and active spaces that celebrate the ocean, wind, flora and landform. The detail of the design has been carefully executed and shows integrity, complexity and nuance through a credible narrative. The overall experience is one of inclusivity, exuberance and fun.
