2016 New Zealand Architecture Awards Winner
Toko Toru Tapu Church, Manutuke
A decade and a half of thorough research, extensive consultation, determined fundraising and careful constructions have resulted in the inspiring revitalisation of one of New Zealand’s most important Māori churches. The history of Toko Toru Tapu Church dates back to 1839, and the existing building is more than a hundred years old. This history has been acknowledged and honoured in a remediation project which has rendered the church safe, secure and fit for purpose, while restoring original features and components. Faith and works, combined, have proved to be the salvation of a significant heritage building.
