Mary Potter Apartments
An extension of 12 market-rental units has been integrated sympathetically into an existing community providing housing for elderly residents. The simple gable roofs of the existing units are referenced in the new buildings, which strongly reminiscent of the best ‘Christchurch Modern’ houses of the 1960s. The apartments are arranged around a central courtyard and laid out in a manner encouraging of communal interaction while mindful of privacy. Materials have been well chosen and finishes are of good quality – the design is crisp but also homely. An impressive generosity, and deep respect for the mission of the client and the needs of residents, characterise this successful exercise in community building.
