University Of Otago School of Medicine and Health Sciences
A vibrant heart for the University of Otago School of Medicine has been created within the awkward leftover spaces between existing buildings on the south side of Wellington Hospital. Generous pathways and wide stairs define the strong axes that anchor the scheme, linking old and new. From this foundation a considered mix of extending the raw aesthetic of the 1970’s concrete buildings and the introduction of timber, colour and light deep into the plan, combine to provide a warm and human learning environment. This is further enriched by clever integration of artwork into the fabric of the building, a factor that illustrates the architects’ willingness to collaborate - an essential ingredient to the success of this project.
